Villa Oeiras Carcavelos (Portugal)

A historic, 7-year-old fortified wine, made in a similar way to Port, but in the Lisbon region.

It has a distinctive caramel flavour, with hints of nuts,marzipan, caramel and butterscotch. It is smooth and velvety, excellent served at room temperature or lightly chilled. 

Villa Oeiras is a wonderful new producer making old wines. The old estate of the Marquis de Pombal is now under the ownership of the local authority, and they are investing in their heritage to revitalise the vineyard areas and the almost-forgotten style of wine that is Carcavelos.

A great alternative to white port!  Lots of fruit – sweet orange and dried stone fruits with a hazelnut and almond nuttiness provided by 7 years of ageing.  This is definitely a sweet dessert wine but is well balanced with caramel and biscuit notes.
