Passo del Cardinale Primitivo (Italy)
Passo del Cardinale Primitivo (Italy)
Big, beefy, and as full bodied as your Dad after Christmas lunch, this is an exceptional red. It has huge, persistent, chewy blackberry and blackcurrant flavours, all balanced by a nice acidity. At this price, it’s a steal!
The wine presents a ruby red colour with garnet reflections. On the nose, an intense bouquet of black berried fruits that fades into notes of liquorice and coffee. The finish is persistent, with notes of berry jam and spices!
Primitivo is native to Puglia, and its grapes ripen very early compared to other varieties. An interesting peculiarity of Primitivo is that after only 20 days from the harvest, this vine is able to give a decent second production. Traditionally the fruits of this "second harvest" are used to give freshness to this powerful wine by improving the acidity of first harvest!
The great body of Primitivo enables to pair well alongside rich, meaty dishes. A perfectly grilled steak would be dreamy, with classic peppercorn sauce to bring out spicy characters in the wine.
