Wow.... what a banging bottle this is. This Sicilian Nero d'Avola packs a mighty punch - it's made with partially dried grapes. Expect notes of dark cherries, damsons and blackcurrants. Silky smooth tannins, great depth of flavour and layers of complexity.
The Appassimento method is usually associated with northern Italy, used to make iconic Amarone wines in Valpolicella. This is the first wine we have stocked using this method made outside of Northern Italy!
The very best Nero d’Avola grapes are selected from Belice and Agrigento on Sicily’s west coast, two of the island’s key areas for this grape. A percentage of the grapes are dried for 3 to 4 weeks, after which time they have lost around 30% of their weight. As the water in the grapes evaporates, the grapes develop a deliciously concentrated fruit flavour.
Match with rich meat-based pasta sauces, red meats and mature hard cheeses.
