Borgate Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (Italy)
Borgate Montepulciano d'Abruzzo (Italy)
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo can sometimes be coarse, but this wine is nothing of the sort! It has plump damsony fruit, a degree of refinement, and a juicy middle palate.
The wine is brilliant ruby red in colour, with intense scents of red berries and sour cherries. Overall, this is a smooth, harmonious wine with soft tannins. The palate is of strawberries, ripe red fruit and a hint of balsamic. Easy to drink, with enough acidity to work well with a variety of dishes
This wine from Abruzzo is characterised by its Apennine terroir. The few flat areas are situated high above sea level, with conditions varying from cool and humid in the high inland, to warmer and drier at the Adriatic coast. Most of the vineyards are located on hills with calcareous clay soils along the Adriatic Sea.
The red grape variety Montepulciano is widespread in central Italy and used in Abruzzo for the famous Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. It is an ancient grape variety, distinguishable from the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is made of Sangiovese. Montepulciano was named after the Tuscan city of the same name, located in the province of Siena.
The wine ages for 6 month barriques.
Pair the wine with central Italian dishes, or mature cheese and damson/fruit jam.
