The Bastardo grape variety was almost extinct in Madeira for many years. Its recovery was due to Teófilo Cunha, who in 2004 planted vineyards of that variety on his family ́s lands in São Jorge, located on the north of the island. Barbeito's first Bastardo harvest took place in 2007 and since then they have been determined to experiment as much as possible with the grapes that came into the winery each year. For this blend, there are three wines from the Bastardo grape variety: 25% from 2007, 25% from 2009, both direct pressing; 50% from 2011 fermented with skin maceration and stored in 2 small casks. In November 2021, 2184 units were bottled and numbered.
TASTING NOTES:
Amber Colour. Fresh bouquet with a hint of tobacco, wood (pine), dried figs, dates and walnuts. This Bastardo reveals all its identity in the mouth, where sweetness, acidity and a light spiciness blend in harmony. Polished, with a long, silky finish. Excellent as an aperitif, but also pairs well with cheese, sushi and smoked ham.
SERVING & CELLARAGE:
Best served between 13/14oC. This wine was filtered and does not require decanting. It will last and maintain in good condition several months once opened.
